Tilapia Farming

Discover A Better Way to Farm Fish With Aquaponics

Learn more about aquaponics.

Tilapia is a fairly new fish to catch on in the US but have been farmed in other parts of the world for over 2500 years. Tilapia are relatively easy to raise since they are hardy, fast growing and very prolific. They can be so prolific that they have become pests in areas where they have been established in the wild. But in a controlled environment, they can produce a lot of protein in a short amount of time.

Tilapia will eat a wide variety of food, one of their favorite being algae. For fast growth, farm raised tilapia are usually fed high protein pellets. Tilapia are very efficient at converting feed into body mass. Body growth of up to 3% per day is not uncommon, although 2% is more of the average.

Tilapia is a tropical fish and they require warm water. Water should be kept over 60 degrees F but is better to be kept in the 80s.

I am the chairman and CEO, Asagyam Help For the Needy(ASAHN), an Accra Ghana, based NGO. The organization is into pig farming to raise funds for our daily activities. Recently I was discussing with a colleaqgue on facebook and he suggested that we Tilapia farming to our activities because pig farming is expensive in Ghana, because all the pig feeds are imported from outside and are very expensive for a local NGO to buy. my question is, can you brief me if there is a specific water body suitable for Tilapia and what condition is good for its farming. Thanks a lot

    Hi Mr. Dugan,
Recently I have purchased a greenhouse. I’d like to set up an aquaponic system in the greenhouse. I’m not sure if I should raise some tilapia fish because I’m living in Maryland. Weather can get pretty cold out here. Do you have any suggestions on what type of fish I should raise?
    Thanks!
    Yan

Those of you in africa or other warm climates should look into raising black soldier fly larvae and using them for the feed for your fish. I did a trial run on this for a research project at my school and I found that there was no difference in growth rate for the fish raised on the larvae as compared to the fish raised on commercial feed.

I am also interested in learning more about how to raise tilapia outside of the laboratory in a more commercial setting. Please send me information.

I heard that when you use Talapia in aquaponics, you have to add salt to the water to firm up the meat. Is that true??? How much would you have to add????
